The Five Best Family Cars
For lots of people, a car is more than just a vehicle to get from place to place. Families in particular prize their vehicle as a combination of taxi, commuting-mobile and road-trip provider. A family car has to do much more than just drive well – it has to accommodate your family, provide a good experience and keep everyone happy. No small task.
Fortunately, there are lots of cars that excel when it comes to shuttling your family around safely. Here at Motorparks, we’ve chosen five of our favourites, based on economy, space and fun to drive.
If you’re in the market for a new vehicle for your loved ones to enjoy, here are some of the best family cars you can buy, presented in no particular order.
The SEAT Leon is a vehicle that is perfect for smaller families. It’s a hatchback that offers great handling and performance but is also laden with space and is comfortable to drive. It has similar design elements to a Volkswagen Golf but is more affordable.
The five door hatch is ideal for families, offering plenty of room for four fully grown adults. The boot has a large capacity too, so plenty of space for shopping and luggage.
The fuel economy figures can also reach up to 74mpg, making it great for short runs out or longer trips. If you don’t want to give up on performance when you’re buying a family vehicle, this is a great choice. Every model comes turbocharged.
A vehicle that offers premium SUV-level motoring and incredibly high levels of safety, the Volvo is a triumph of Swedish design. The 222bhp D5 version is arguably the best model available, with a diesel engine that gets more economy than petrol rivals.
If safety and utility are your main concerns, the Volvo XC90 is the way to go. The car has seven seats, a large boot and a range of safety features, from auto-braking tech to self-parking and queue assist. If you opt for the diesel model, you’ll get a modest 49.6mpg too.
A big family car that offers plenty of fun, the Mazda 6 has a large cabin in both saloon and tourer versions. It fits five people comfortably and has a spacious boot – but has sporty styling that makes it stand out amongst rivals.
The engines available are a 2.0 litre SkyActiv-G petrol and a 2.2 litre SkyActiv-D diesel. The diesel model gets the highest bhp, at 173, and offers low emissions and high efficiency (netting around 62.8mpg). If you’d like a sporty looking family car, this is the model for you.
A crossover that has debuted in the wake of the successful Nissan Qashqai, the Renault Kadjar is a car that has bettered its competitor in almost every regard. It’s a large, safe and refined ride for all the family, offering plenty of space alongside affordability.
Cheaper on emissions, purchase price and even finance options, the Kadjar has a suite of options that will appeal to families – including a sizeable boot and a range of tech options in the better trims. Safety-wise, the car offers a five star NCAP rating with six airbags, hill-start assistance, stability control and anti-lock brakes.
If you want a crossover for less that all the family will adore, the Renault Kadjar is one of the best family cars you can buy.
Ford vehicles are renowned for their reliability and are one of the more affordable family cars. Available for a bargain when used and for an achievable price point when brand new, the Ford Focus is a stalwart of British roads and is excellent for families and singletons alike.
The Focus offers plenty of room for four adults, so will be great for a family with kids. It doesn’t have as spacious a boot as other cars on this list, so is more suited to smaller families who want a sleeker car that offers good performance.
The benefit of going Ford is that their new EcoBoost engines offer lots of performance at a fraction of the cost. The Zetec 1.0T EcoBoost offers plenty of torque but also is economical by offering on average 65mpg.
For an all-rounder that marries family days out with a punchy ride and reliability, you can’t go wrong with a Ford Focus.
