Peugeot's second generation 5008 7-seat family SUV gets a useful mid-term update. Jonathan Crouch takes a look at what's on offer.
Peugeot returned to the family-orientated seven-seat SUV segment with this second generation 5008 model and here, it's been usefully improved. It's more targeted at Surbiton than the Serengeti but that's what buyers want these days. These people will love the integrated mobility solutions that can slot into the boot - and the luxurious, spacious cabin. It's also notably efficient and very safety orientated.
Back in 2007, an explosion in consumer interest in SUVs left Peugeot scratching its head a little. The French brand had no contender of that kind to offer and needed a short-term stop-gap model to compete in this growing segment. So the marque turned to Mitsubishi, whose Outlander 4x4 was re-branded as the Peugeot 4007. That car stayed on the market until 2012, when it was replaced in Europe by a smarter-looking 4008 model we didn't get in the UK. When the time came to replace the 4008, Peugeot knew that British buyers would want the new design - the car we're going to look at here, badged '5008'. The first generation 5008 was an MPV. In 2017, this moniker was applied to this second generation design, a spacious seven-seat SUV, a model subtly updated in mid-2020 to create the car we're going to look at here. Is it any good? Let's find out.
Despite this 5008 model's positioning within the SUV genre, Peugeot won't be offering it with 4WD, which won't really help with the rough and ready marketing. In compensation, an 'Advanced Grip Control' system is being offered for extra traction on slippery surfaces. And there's 'Hill Assist Descent Control to ease you down slippery slopes. The engine line-up is carried over from other models in the brand's range. That means the majority of customers will continue to choose the 130bhp three cylinder 1.2-litre PureTech petrol powerplant, offered with either manual or automatic transmission. There's also an auto-only 1.6-litre PureTech 180hp petrol unit. And a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel with 130hp, also only available with the EAT8 auto. If you want a bit more pulling power - as you might if you'll regularly be using this car to transport seven people - then a 180hp auto-only version with a 2.0-litre BlueHDi diesel is also available. On the move, the compact steering wheel allows for wrist-flick direction changes. If the development team had been able to give the car a little more steering feel, we might even have called it quite fun to drive. And it's still one of the better-riding 7-seat Crossovers of its kind. The light, stiff EMP2 platform that provides for this has also allowed the engineers to give this car a supple ride that's only upset by the sharpest urban potholes. At highway speeds, it's very composed indeed and this, along with impressive refinement, makes the 5008 an exemplary long distance tourer.
Peugeot hopes that this revised version of the MK2 model 5008 looks every bit the mid-sized family SUV that so many buyers seem to want. Certainly all the hallmarks are there: a long, horizontal bonnet, a vertical front end and a raised body line. At the front, updates to this facelifted version include restyled headlights that flank a smarter frameless grille, while gloss black side scoops and a painted treadplate are integrated within a fresh bumper design. At the rear, upgraded taillights feature full LED technology with Peugeot's iconic three-claw rear light signature and sequential indicator lights. The smarter lights are covered with a clear, smoked glass finish that extends the black boot lid on each side of the vehicle. Under the skin, it's all still based on a light, stiff 'EMP2' platform. The 2.84m wheelbase and long 4.64-metre length should certainly make the car very spacious inside and the class-leading 1,060-litre boot capacity figure seems to bear that out. Three matching, separate, folding seats in the second row are provided, each adjustable in length and inclination. Plus there are two removable, separate, folding seats in the third row. There's also a foldable front passenger seat that will enable owners to carry especially long loads up to 3.20m in length. And, as is the current fashion, the option of hands-free motorised tailgate. Boot space ranges from 780-litres to 1,940-litres. At the wheel, as usual with Peugeot's i-Cockpit design, you're required to view the instrument binnacle over the rim of the usual small steering wheel, rather than through its spokes, the binnacle in question being of the virtual digital kind, with traditional gauges replaced by a big 12.3-inch screen. A further 10-inch screen on the centre stack comes with seven elegant piano 'toggle switches' providing direct access to main control functions, including the radio, Connected 3D Navigation and vehicle settings.
This 5008 is much pricier than its old MPV predecessor because it competes in a more expensive market segment. Likely rivals are 7-seat family SUVs like Kia's Sorento, Hyundai's Santa Fe and Mitsubishi's Outlander - maybe also Land Rover's Discovery Sport. That means pricing that sees the car selling mainly in the £29,000 to £42,000 bracket. In other words, Peugeot certainly isn't shy about charging for this car. Most 5008 sales will continue to be made at well under the £35,000 price point though and there are three main trim levels - 'Active', 'Allure' and 'GT', each built upon by an intermediate level called 'Premium'. To try and justify those kinds of figures, Peugeot has tried to offer class-leading standards of luxury. Body-hugging front seats feature an optional multipoint massage system, plus owners will be able to specify a thumping 'FOCAL' Premium Hi-Fi system and a huge panoramic opening glass roof. Media connectivity will, as you would expect, include Mirror Screen smartphone connectivity and a sophisticated 3D connected navigation system, this one linking into the TomTom Traffic system. There's also an arsenal of safety features including an Automatic Emergency Braking System, a Distance Alert set-up, Active Lane Keeping Assistance, Driver attention warning, Smart Beam Assistance, Speed sign recognition with a 'speed suggestion' feature, Active blind spot monitoring, Park Assist and for auto models, Adaptive cruise control with a stop feature. Built in to the design is the option for owners to add in innovative mobility solutions which can be integrated into the boot, namely the 'e-Kick', a very smart electrically assisted folding scooter, and the 'e-Bike eF01', a new electrically assisted portable bicycle.
Peugeot is claiming class-leading running costs from this car's powertrains. Whether the choice is petrol or diesel, all versions are reckoned to stand out above their competitors with engines of the same power class. Let's get to the WLTP figures. CO2 emissions are as low as 150g/km for the 1.2-litre petrol variant (which manages up to 46mpg on the combined cycle). And only 139g/km for the 1.5 auto diesel (and up to 58.6mpg). So how have Peugeot's engineers achieved such strong standards of efficiency? With the PureTech petrol models, the answer lies in lighter weight and a large reduction in mechanical losses that are due to friction. As for the PSA Group's BlueHDi diesel technology, well the concept here is based around a clever three-step after-treatment system designed to better eliminate the four nasty pollutants that diesel units usually put out - namely unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and particulates. The first stage sees the unwanted hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide elements converted into harmless water and carbon dioxide. In the second stage, that nasty nitrogen oxide also gets converted into water via a 'Selective Catalytic Reduction' process using a urea and water mixture called 'AdBlue' (something you'll have to get topped up every 12,500 miles). Finally, in the third step, a Particulate Emissions Filter eliminates virtually all particulates at a stroke. The result of all this is industry-leading diesel technology that many manufacturers are struggling to copy.
We're told by Peugeot that this car represents a 'lifestyle choice' and if that's the case, it needs to be able to change aspects of your motoring lifestyle; the atmosphere you drive in; the way you can use the cabin instruments; the kind of mobility choices you can make at journey's end. Sure enough, a 5008 can make a difference in all these areas, in a way that no other car in this class can. Of course, it needs to get the basics right too. So it's just as well that this is also one of the most spacious and efficient cars in its segment, attributes aided by the stiff, sophisticated EMP2 platform. True, the diesel engines can be a little noisy when pushed. And other models in the sector can still handle better on the limit, though to some extent, the direct, involving feel delivered by the clever 'i-Cockpit' driving position is effective in masking this. You may also be disappointed to find that unlike its rivals, Peugeot isn't prepared to offer a 4WD option on mainstream models. So, how to sum up? Well this is, like its 3008 stablemate, a very sophisticated kind of mid-sized SUV. It feels special in a way that no other car in this segment does. In a way that's uniquely Peugeot. That's important. As this car undoubtedly will be for its brand.

SUVs are very popular these days. Like a badge of honour for stressed out and overworked parents, they're cars designed to make school runs, shopping trips and family holidays that bit more straightforward when you've a cluster of little ones in tow. Considering the SUV's popularity, it's quite surprising that Peugeot has taken so long to offer a decently wide range of them - but that's changed now, this MK2 model 5008 completing this section of the French brand's line-up. At over 4.5 meters long, the 5008 isn't particularly compact but it does have seven seats and the rear ones are big enough to be usable by human beings with the traditional array of limbs. If you usually find large SUVs a little dull, Peugeot's effort might be of even more interest because it's been designed to look more svelte than most of its rivals and drive in a fashion that has more in common with a normal car than a Routemaster bus. I like the cut of Peugeot's jib where this SUV is concerned but I've also lost count of the number of SUVs that have claimed to offer sporty handling and thrusting looks but failed to deliver. Reserving judgement, I'll give the 5008 an initial thumbs up and take a closer look.
From the outside, the 5008 appears to have quite a high window line and that adds to its well proportioned looks but inside, there's still plenty of glass area to let the light in. The seats are mounted quite high in the vehicle, which helps kids sat in the rear maintain a good view out. An even more airy feel can be gained via the full length glass sunroof that was fitted to the test vehicle. In terms of space, the 5008 does very nicely. The front and middle rows are extremely roomy, even for taller adults, and you could even squeeze a couple of grown-ups into the rear rows in an emergency. These back seats are better reserved for smaller children, however. They can be accessed with ease thanks to a clever system where the outer seats in the middle row fold up and slid forward in one movement. Every one of the rear seats folds down separately to create a flat load floor. The total load space ranges from 166-litres with all the seats in use to a vast 2,150-litres with them all folded down. Because the seats fold and move independently, there's huge scope to adjust the cabin's layout. Build quality seems generally good on the 5008 and the layout of the controls is easy to fathom. The high centre console splits the front seats to create a cockpit effect around the driver. There's even a head-up display on high spec models to continue the aeronautical theme.
As expected, this car shares all its powerplants with the shorter but otherwise very similar 3008 SUV it's based upon - so there's a range of BlueHDi diesels and a zesty1.2-litre three cylinder PureTech petrol unit, with the company's 'EAT6' 6-speed auto gearbox widely available as an option on most models. On the subject of auto transmission, you have to have it if you're one of the tiny minority of buyers who'll opt for the older 1.6-litre THP 165bhp turbo petrol engine that the brand has rather unnecessarily included in the line-up further up the range. I was impressed by the base 1.2-litre PureTech unit's balance of power and efficiency - it's capable of up to 55.4mpg on the combined cycle and 117g/km of CO2. Probably the line-up's best all-round choice though, is the most modern of the diesel units, a 1.5-litre 130bhp BlueHDi powerplant. This gives you the frugality of the entry-level 100bhp 1.6-litre BlueHDi unit, but also most of the pulling power of the top 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine I tried, this flagship unit available with either 150 or 180bhp. Unlike its rivals, Peugeot doesn't think the provision of any kind of 4WD system is necessary with mainstream versions of this car, but as an option, it does offer an 'Advanced Grip Control' system that helps you regain traction in slippery conditions. The suspension is tuned for comfort but Peugeot claims that it will still deliver an engaging drive in what is a substantial vehicle. Ease of manoeuvrability is vital in a big family vehicle like the 5008 and Peugeot is offering a series of driver aids to make things easier. Front and rear parking sensors are supplemented by a system that measures roadside parking spaces and gives an indication of whether the 5008 will fit. For something of its size and weight, the car resists body roll well and feels planted on the road. It steers and stops in a way that inspires confidence and only the clunky manual gearbox on our car served as any kind of disappointment.
So, let's get to the pricing, which is pitched mainly in the £25,000 to £35,000 bracket - pretty much what you'd expect to pay these days for the kind of larger mid-sized seven-seat SUV that this 5008 now is. Unlike a lot of its rivals, this model comes solely in seven-seat form; if you only need five seats, you'll be directed by your Peugeot dealer to the smaller 3008 SUV this model is based upon, a Crossover that will come with a £2,000 model-for-model saving over this one. That car, in turn, sits above the supermini-based 2008 SUV that brand would doubtless see as a perfect second family runabout for any 5008 buyer. As with the 3008, the most affordable 5008 variants use Peugeot's impressively efficient three cylinder 1.2-litre PureTech 130bhp turbo petrol unit - and that might be all you really need if your annual mileage is quite low. Around 60% of customers though, are expected to want to pay extra for one of the most affordable BlueHDi diesel variants; there's a 1.6-litre BlueHDi 100 unit offered at a premium of around £1,000 over the petrol powerplant, but we'd be minded to find a little more for the more modern, pokier and efficient 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 unit that'll move this car along quite a lot more energetically. If you want with these engines, there's the option of Peugeot's 'EAT6' automatic gearbox for an extra £1,400. Across the line-up, there's a choice of four trim levels - 'Active', 'Allure', a 'GT Line' option and the top 'GT' version. Upper spec variants get the option of a 2.0-litre BlueHDi diesel with either 150 or 180bhp.
I'll have to recommend the 5008, there are no two ways about it. It mixes most of the practicality you get from today's top seven-seat SUVs with an enjoyable driving experience and sharper looks than we've come to expect in this sector. The interior is well thought out and even the build quality seems a cut above some of Peugeot's recent efforts. All in all, it's an impressive effort from a manufacturer without much of a record in this segment.
