If you're thinking of buying a new supermini, you're probably not thinking of trying a new Nissan Micra. Having tried this car in its appealing IG-T 90 form, Jonathan Crouch wonders whether you ought to add this model to your shopping list.

Ten Second Review

Once again, the Nissan Micra is a very class-competitive, characterful supermini. This time, it's stylish and very good to drive, while setting a high standard with its sense of safety. You know that car in this class you were thinking of? Stack it up against this one. Here, we look at the most popular variant, that fitted out with Nissan's perky IG-T 90 0.9-litre turbo petrol engine.

Background

Here's a supermini with a lot to prove. Made by a brand with a lot of ground to make up in this segment. Welcome to the fifth generation Nissan Micra. There certainly are no half-measures this time round, with a full-on European design mostly engineered in the UK and built in the same French Renault plant near Paris that makes that brand's rival Clio model. The Micra shares an evolved version of that car's platform too, but just about everything else here is new, something you'll have already picked up on from a glance at the avant garde looks. They usher in a completely fresh driving experience, with drive dynamics borrowed from larger models in the Nissan line-up. Hi-tech safety and media technology's been democratised for use here too, plus there's a far more pleasingly designed cabin that offers more space and can be embellished with some tempting customer options. We thought we'd put it all to the test at the wheel of the volume IG-T 90 petrol variant.

Driving Experience

One of the reasons that Nissan has been so freed up to develop other aspects of this Micra is that it hasn't had to worry much about the oily bits. As with the basic platform of this car, these come directly from Renault's fourth generation Clio, with most buyers likely to select between the pair of three cylinder petrol engines on offer. There's a 71PS 1.0-litre normally aspirated unit, but we'd urge you to try and stretch to the preferable 0.9-litre 'IG-T 90' turbo powerplant we tried, a variant that mixes peppier performance with more acceptable economy. 62mph from rest takes 12.1s en route to 109mph. What isn't typical in this segment is the level of electronic sophistication that this Micra delivers as standard. All models get Nissan's 'Chassis Control' package incorporating 'Active Trace Control' (which helps corner turn-in) and 'Active Ride Control' (which calms the body pitching you'd normally get over sharper bumps). Both systems use automatic and very subtle brake application and give a more fluid, flowing feel to the way this Micra progresses down the road. The rather firm suspension can't quite complement this and we'd like a little more feel at speed from the steering but otherwise, we're impressed with the drive dynamics on offer here. In the class, only Ford's Fiesta is more fun to punt along. In short, it's all a huge step forward from anything the Micra model line has served up before.

Design and Build

Expressive and emotive, this is the kind of shape you'd more readily associate with a motorshow concept car than a production model, with an athletic silhouette that's much longer, lower and wider than what was offered before. Inside, things have been much enhanced over what went before, the fascia based around what Nissan calls a 'gliding wing' dashboard layout which feels of much higher quality and can be personalised with colour-coded versions of this centre panel. Through the 'D'-shaped multi-function steering wheel, the instrument cluster is much as you'd find it on a more expensive Qashqai crossover model. The incorporated 5-inch TFT screen can either be set to show everything from navigation to performance data. Or it can be used to customise many of the car's electronic systems. Anything this monitor can't tell you will probably be covered off by the 7-inch centre-dash infotainment touchscreen you get providing you avoid entry-level trim. Probably, the extra technology helps influence the greater perception of quality this time round and our favourite touch is the optional 'BOSE Personal Premium Audio System' which comes with two speakers actually built into the driver's head rest. Rear seat headroom is restricted as a result of the swept-back roofline but in compensation, there's a decently-sized 300-litre boot.

Market and Model

Price isn't the only determining factor in supermini segment success. If it was, then the previous generation version of this car would still have sold in reasonable numbers. Still, Nissan knows that if it's to achieve its target of making this a top ten segment contender, then it must be costed very competitively. The technology included here prevents the Japanese maker pitching this car at budget brand levels, but a sharp pricing span that will see most models sell in the £12,000 to £16,000 bracket gives dealers plenty to work with. The IG-T 90 0.9-litre petrol turbo variant we tried is priced from around £14,000. With this engine, all variants get niceties like air conditioning, front foglamps, rain-sensing wipers and 'Intelligent' auto headlights that dip themselves at night in the face of oncoming traffic. You also get a rear roof spoiler, LED daytime running lights, a trip computer, a height-adjustable driver's seat, remote central locking, a stereo with Bluetooth connections and the 60:40 split-folding rear seatback that some rivals make you do without at this level. We'd question the lack of a DAB radio at this level (and the rather feeble two-speaker audio set-up) but apart from that, the key items are pretty much all there. Plus there's a much higher-than-average level of safety equipment - including autonomous braking, lane departure warning and a lane weaving aid.

Cost of Ownership

As for the figures, well it may seem a touch counter-intuitive that the more powerful 90PS turbo unit is cleaner and more frugal than the base 71PS normally aspirated engine, but that's mainly because, for reasons best known to Nissan, the entry-level unit can't be specified with an engine start/stop system. This budget powerplant manages 61.4mpg on the combined cycle and 103g/km of CO2, figures the 'IGT-90' turbo model improves to 64.2mpg and 99g/km. On the top 'Tekna' model we tried, the use of larger 17-inch wheels will hit those returns by around 5%. What about other running cost issues? Well, service intervals for the petrol engines come round every 12 months or 12,500 miles, depending on which comes soonest. For the turbodiesel motor, the one year period remains the same but you can travel up to 18,500 miles between scheduled stops before any maintenance will be required. As part of any Nissan dealer visit with your car, you'll be provided with a free courtesy vehicle and a video health check for your Micra that you can watch on your 'phone or computer. Nissan also provides a three year, 60,000-mile warranty as standard and that can be lengthened to four years but with the same mileage cap.

Summary

We knew this fifth generation Micra would be a huge improvement. It had to be. The previous model was, if anything, a backward step from its predecessor. Perhaps though, we weren't prepared for just how serious Nissan was going to get in its pursuit of supermini segment success. What that all leaves us with is a car that ought to appeal way beyond the core market the Micra has always previously targeted - cash-strapped parents, driving instructors and motorists of a certain age. In our view, it's everything a thoroughly modern supermini should be - stylish, sophisticated and cheap to run. In short, we urge you to approach this car with a fresh perspective. After, Nissan certainly did.

Here's a very different-looking Nissan Micra. If like many of us, you'd always seen this model line as a rather boring, predictable choice in the supermini segment, it's probably time to revise those opinions. This 'Gen5' version is better in virtually every way - as Jonathan Crouch discovers.

Ten Second Review

When the first Nissan Micra appeared more than 30 years ago, it marked a revolution in the small hatchback segment and opened a new chapter for Nissan. This fifth generation Micra, we're told, is just as revolutionary, and is intended to raise expectations for what a small hatchback can, and should, deliver to its customer.

Background

The little Micra is a very significant car in Nissan's history. Originally launched in the early Eighties, in second generation form it became the very first Japanese model to win the European Car of the Year award, the first Far Eastern supermini purpose-built for Western tastes. To make absolutely sure, Nissan decided to build the car in Britain and style the second and third generation models with a daring flair that perfectly suited a small car market becoming ever-more image-conscious. These were cars perfectly in tune with their times. That was less the case though, with the fourth generation version, which arrived here at the very end of 2010. Out-sourced for build in India, this MK4 model was intended to be cheap as a result. The problem was that it rather felt it and as a result, sales were disappointing. The Micra should have been one of Nissan UK's top sellers. Instead, it lagged behind the company's niche Qashqai, Juke and Note models. But forget all of that now. This French-built 'Gen5' version is a very different proposition - as we're about to discover....

Driving Experience

Under the bonnet, buyers get the choice of either a naturally aspirated 73hp 1.0-litre petrol engine, a 0.9-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol unit or a 1.5-litre diesel, the latter two powerplants both developing 90hp. Of perhaps more importance are the efforts that have been put in to improve the way that this Micra 'Gen5' drives. This model now features what Nssan calls 'Active Ride Control' for enhanced ride comfort, and 'Active Trace Control' for reduced understeer and sharper handling - both features borrowed from the brand's larger Qashqai and X-Trail models. A new brushless electric power steering system - for greater steering feel and response - is also available. And much attention has been paid to reducing noise in the cabin. Improvements include considerably improved noise insulation and optimisation of the car's aerodynamic performance. Enhanced aero efficiency has been achieved thanks to the combined roof and side spoiler. As a result, this Micra has achieved a Cd of 0.29 - impressive for a supermini of this class.

Design and Build

If you're used to the conservative design of the old fourth generation Micra, you may need to sit down and have a cup of hot sweet tea after looking at this one. The styling remains faithful to that of the 2015 Geneva Motor Show 'Sway' concept car that led to the development of this one. It's a riot of emotive curves and creases, with design cues including a distinctive V-motion grille, from where a sharp-edged character line runs through to the rear end with its boomerang-shaped lights. There's a so-called 'floating roof', an effect created by blacked-out rear C-pillars that hide the rear door handles so as to create a 'coupe'-like look. All of this is matched by a wider selection of more vivid colours, including a particularly vibrant 'Energy Orange'. Inside, much attention has been paid to driver comfort, with a lower driving position for a more secure driving feel. It should be easy for all drivers to achieve the perfect driving position thanks to greater seat adjustment, the fully adjustable steering wheel and the optimal positioning of the pedals and shift lever. The car's extended width and wheelbase means cabin space is now among the best in class. The gliding wing-shaped dashboard gives the cabin a light, sleek and spacious look.

Market and Model

Prices start at around £12,000 and there are five grade levels to choose from - Visia, Visia+, Acenta, N-Connecta and Tekna. Buyers will be limited to a five-door hatch bodystyle. Nissan hope that the car will appeal to 'downsizers', people trading out of larger cars into smaller ones that remain plush and technologically savvy. To make it appealing to these people, there's what the brand hopes is class-leading levels of electronic safety and media connectivity. Safety features include 'Lane Departure Prevention' and 'Intelligent Emergency Braking with pedestrian recognition', as well as an 'Intelligent Around View Monitor', 'Traffic Sign Recognition', 'High Beam Assist' and 'Blind Spot Warning'. As for the media stuff, well Micra 'Gen5' comes with a 7-inch full colour central display, providing access to the audio system, satellite navigation, mobile phone connectivity, downloadable apps and Siri voice control via Apple CarPlay. Nissan has also worked with Bose to develop a bespoke 6-speaker 'Personal sound system' for the car, with two Bose 'UltraNearfield' speakers, combined with Bose 'PersonalSpace Virtual Audio Technology' built into the driver seat headrest for a remarkably immersive listening experience.

Cost of Ownership

However style-led and fashion-conscious any modern supermini might be, it's not going to sell unless its running costs remain pragmatic. Here, that's not an issue. The entry-level 73bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine isn't particularly frugal but the 0.9-litre 90bhp unit achieves a much better combination of performance and efficiency. Ideally in this regard though, you'd go for the 1.5-litre dCi diesel. Here, you can expect around 80mpg on the combined cycle and under 95g/km of CO2. As you'd expect, Nissan has developed a Stop-Start system for the car to cut the engine when you don't need it, stuck in traffic or waiting at the lights. If you've got a top version with the optional 'Connect' sat nav set-up, then you'll also have a navigation system with so-called 'eco-routing', a feature that sees it able to calculate the route likely to use the least fuel. What else? Well residual values won't be quite as strong as some more established rivals in this segment, but the high specification on offer will help here, as it prevents buyers from diluting their residuals by adding expensive options.

Summary

In the supermini segment, it's going to take a very special car to divert customers from their Fiestas and Corsas. If this Micra Gen5 isn't that car, then it's hard to see what else the Japanese brand could have done. In virtually every respect, it's a big step forward from its forgettable predecessor. As a result, what's been delivered here is a supermini able to duke it out with the class best. A heavily revised interior helps in that regard and the dramatic exterior styling also does much to reinforce the perception of quality. The Micra's chances aren't going to be transformed overnight but this is now a car you could realistically recommend to somebody who doesn't want to follow the crowd. I think Nissan would call that a result.

Nissan's much improved fifth generation Micra has to play to a wide audience. June Neary wonders whether British buyers will appreciate its charms.

Will It Suit Me?

First up, an admission. I grew up with Micras and particularly loved this car's third generation pre-2010 predecessor. There was something delightfully eccentric about it, from its Bakelite-effect switches to its oddly haphazard placing of minor controls. I loved the way you could see the tops of the headlight pods from the driver's seat and I loved its bubbly styling. In contrast, the fourth generation Indian-built design was a disappointment, that model lacking the old model's extrovert nature. Nissan obviously thought so too because in the Autumn of 2016, they introduced the 'Gen5' version featured here. With slicker exterior styling, a much-improved interior, more equipment and better value for money, this car now looks a much better prospect.

Practicalities

Can an extrovert-looking car also be a practical one? This modern Micra's shape is a riot of emotive curves and creases, with design cues including a distinctive V-motion grille, from where a sharp-edged character line runs through to the rear end with its boomerang-shaped lights. Nissan designed the Micra to be one of the safest small cars around, with ESP stability control fitted as standard alongside ABS brakes and six airbags. Seatbelt pretensioners also make the equipment list on all models, while Nissan's latest chassis offers top level impact protection.

Behind the Wheel

The Micra offers decent all-round visibility from behind the wheel A new brushless electric power steering system - for greater steering feel and response - is also available. And much attention has been paid to reducing noise in the cabin. The seats are very comfortable and the three-cylinder 0.9-litre 90bhp 'IG-T 90' petrol engine that most will choose is decently refined. There's also a 73bhp 1.0-litre petrol unit and a 1.5-litre dCi diesel. You'll need to work the little 'IG-T 90' petrol unit quite hard if you need to get a wiggle on, but otherwise it's perfectly at home in town and a better bet if you can stretch to it than the base 73bhp powerplant. The manual gearchange has a sweet shift action and that electrically-assisted power steering system excels in town, where it makes parking and cheeky U-turns a doddle, but out on the open road I think I'd prefer something with a little more feel to it

Value For Money

Could I Live With One?

The Nissan Micra is an extremely good small car that's now a much better bet in a fifth generation guise that's seen it re-discover its mo-jo. If you're looking for something a little more interesting in this segment, it's well worth a look. In fact, I think it might surprise you.
