Introduction

The last version of the Ford KA+, sold between 2018 and early 2020, offered a crossover-themed 'Active' variant which offered a trendier take on citycar motoring. It aimed to appeal to people who wouldn't have considered the ordinary version - which of course was just the point. But does it make sense as a used buy?

History

Need a really small used citycar with an added dose of attitude? If so, here's one you might like - the Ford KA+ Active, sold between 2018 and early 2020. Remember the original Ford KA? If you do, you might recall that though small and cheap, it had character by the bucket load. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for the Polish-made second generation design - or the Indian-built KA+ model that replaced it in 2016. So Ford, in the Spring of 2018, moved to refresh the KA+ with a package of changes including the introduction of this 'SUV'-style KA+ 'Active' derivative. The idea of Crossover styling being applied to a little runabout isn't a new one but until a few years ago, it was a concept we only saw applied to superminis, not cars like this one competing in the smaller citycar sector. In 2017 though, we suddenly saw a number of jacked-up little city sector hatches launched with roughty-tufty styling and a more characterful attitude to life, the Fiat Panda Cross quickly followed by the Suzuki Ignis, the Kia Picanto X-Line and the Vauxhall Viva Rocks. These were the cars this KA+ Active competed against: like them, it obviously never quite had what it took to be a fully-fledged small SUV. For likely buyers, this won't matter one jot. People who would never have considered the KA+ in its unremarkable standard guise will be much happier with the car in this more extrovert form. They'll note that it offers class-leading standards of interior space and be keen to believe Ford when the company insists that this derivative's extra 23mm of ride height hasn't harmed this model's traditionally agile handling. This Active variant vanished from the price lists when the KA+ range was discontinued by Ford in early 2020.

What You Get

There's no doubt that this KA+ Active model will stand out a little more than the standard version on the school run. Does it have the visual character of earlier KA designs? Possibly not. But it's more fashionable and will probably appeal to a wider audience than anything else from this model line. This variant gets a unique black finish for its upper and lower front grilles, plus a silvered lower skid plate. Inside, once you've stepped over the branded sill plates, you'll find yourself in a cabin that's been subtly tweaked over the one you'd get in a standard KA+. A 'Sienna Hazel'-coloured theme features in the seat fabric and the door trim inlays and there are all-weather rubber mats to protect the interior from muddy shoes and boots. This being a converted citycar, you won't be expecting a properly commanding SUV-style driving position - and, despite this lifestyle variant's 'Rough Road Suspension' package, you don't get it either. Mind you in our experience, a lot of small SUVs that are purpose-designed for the Crossover segment lack this too. Standard is a 6.5-inch 'SYNC 3' centre-dash infotainment screen which allows you to activate audio, 'phone or Mobile App options via either voice control or the touchscreen icons. You can't have navigation built into this package but you can stream a navigation app in from your 'phone thanks to this set-up's standard 'Apple CarPlay' and 'Android Auto' compatibility. Enough. Let's move to the area of this car that might really sell it to you - the back seat. This is where the above-average body length for the segment really pays off, providing for a wide door that makes this the easiest citycar in the class for rear passengers to get in and out of. And once inside? Well there's certainly not much to complain about for a model of this kind, unless you're irritated by the lack of things like grab handles, coat hooks and door pockets. We've certainly been in plenty of Fiesta-sized superminis from the next class up that feel more cramped than this KA+ model's cabin. That tall, glassy roofline certainly helps and there's enough legroom for two six-foot adults to sit behind two front-seated friends of similar size. As for the boot, well an immediate irritation is the lack of any sort of tailgate handle but with this facelifted model, you do at least get a button to release the tailgate latch - you can also use the button on the ignition key or the one provided on the dash. Once the tailgate's raised, the 270-litre space revealed is the largest in the citycar class.

What to Look For

The KA+ is built from tough mechanicals and designed to withstand the rigours of third world markets but we did come across a few issues in our owner survey that you'll need to look out for. One owner had an electrical problem that disabled the mirrors, saw all the dash warning lights come on and rev the engine constantly at 2,000rpm; it turned out the air mass sensor had broken. Another owner complained of rattly trim, struggles to engage gear, a creaking exhaust and a reluctance to start. In another case, there were water leaks - into the boot and the passenger footwell; check these areas. In another case, there were idling problems, fuel pressure issues and squeaks from the rear. Apparently, the wheels are very susceptible to pothole damage, so check them carefully.

Replacement Parts

(approx based on a 2018 KA+ Active 1.2 Ti-VCT - Ex Vat) An air filter costs around £18 and an oil filter costs around £8. Brake pads costs around £66 for a front set. A starter motor is around £140. Wiper blades cost in the £8 bracket. A wing mirror glass is in the £22-£24 bracket.

On the Road

At least the KA+ Active won't be burdened by unrealistic customer expectations when it comes to its SUV prowess. No one expects a citycar to be able to function properly off road - not even one dressed for a hiking trip, as is the case here. Still, a bit of extra ride height can get you a surprisingly long way and this variant was raised by 23mm over the standard model. That's actually 5mm more than the increase you get in Ford's only slightly larger Fiesta Active model, though this KA+ Active lacks that car's useful 'Slippery' driving mode. It does though, get a wider track, a larger front anti-roll bar and uniquely tuned Electronic Power Assisted Steering, for optimised crossover handling. Retuned dampers feature a hydraulic rebound stopper for a smoother ride over harsh surfaces, and 'Active Rollover Prevention' works within the Electronic Stability Control system to offer additional security when carrying roof loads. As for engines, well most buyers will choose the three cylinder 1.2-litre Ti-VCT 85PS petrol unit, which makes rest to 62mph in 13.5s on the way to a maximum of 105mph. The minority-interest alternative is a 95PS 1.5-litre TDCi diesel, which offers nearly twice as much pulling power (215Nm) and improves those stats to 11.4s and 111mph. Whatever your engine choice, you'll find that the ride and handling is just as good as it ever was in this model. True, KA+ regulars might notice that this Active variant delivers a touch more body roll than you'd get with the ordinary version of this car, but it's nothing significant; certainly not enough to detract from the kind of handling poise that's a world away from what you'd get in a small SUV. Venture onto the highway and refinement is OK by class standards but not exemplary. The petrol engine has quite a coarse note and there's enough road and wind noise to make a really long trip a little wearing. Of course, this little Ford is much more at home within the city limits. We found it agile around town, easy to park and perfect for parents thanks to its spacious size. In short, it ticks a lot of boxes. All of this is of course of much greater significance than what this car can do off road - which isn't very much. But we tried it around a field to find out anyway and found that, as advertised, those special hydraulic rebound stoppers do indeed smooth out the ride a bit over clumps and bumps. But on such terrain in this car, you'd always get the feeling of being a bit of a fish out of water. The 'Active' badging here doesn't designate any sort of SUV. Just a car a little more ready for the real world.

Overall

Back at the turn of the century, there was no doubt that the beetle-browed little Ford KA was an inherently characterful car. In its standard forms, the later KA+ just wasn't, which is why this 'Active' version was pretty well received. It's not our job to tell you whether it's better looking or more interestingly styled than its direct segment rivals from this period. But we will say that the 'Active' package of visual changes made a world of difference to this car's showroom appeal. And in summary? Well it's true that this Active variant may be more geared up for the perils of off street parking rather than off road expeditions, but that's really all potential buyers will care about. In today's SUV-obsessed used car market, it's a citycar of its time. And if you're shopping in this segment, we can see why you might want one.

Introduction

Having launched the KA+ in 2016, Ford improved it in 2018 with a significant package of changes and it was in this form that this model saw out its remaining production run, which ended at the beginning of 2020. Are these last KA+ models worth seeking out on the used market? They featured a more up to date three cylinder petrol engine, better infotainment provision and the option of a fashionable 'Active' body style for those wanting it. As before, particular strengths of this design include a spacious cabin and rewarding handling. Potentially then, there's a lot to like here.

5DR CITYCAR (1.2 TI-VCT PETROL / 1.5 TDCI DIESEL]

History

A small car can have big ideas, even if it's city-sized. For proof of that, you've only to try the model we're going to look at here, the KA+. It was launched in 2016, then usefully revised in the Spring of 2018 to create the model we're going to look at here. You might know the KA model line. In its original first generation form, Ford's smallest contender was difficult to forget, bug-shaped, beetle-browed and hailed by many at its original launch in 1996 as the most innovative thing the industry had produced since the early Mini. Over half a million examples of the MK1 model were sold over a production run that lasted an incredible 12 years with hardly any changes. The car's success lay in its simplicity, which made it cheap to make and sell. It was a formula Ford should have stuck to. They didn't. In 2008, the second generation KA tried to move a little more up-market and offer a fashionable, slightly more affordable alternative for people who couldn't stretch to trendy small products like BMW's new-era MINI. But the Fiat 500 that MK2 KA was based upon was already satisfying these kinds of customers and doing so with cute credibility that the Ford simply couldn't match. That left the KA awkwardly placed, with a three-door-only bodystyle that didn't really save you much over a far more practical five-door Fiesta, once Ford dealers had done their sums. Sales were unsurprisingly disappointing. Hence the need for a different approach with this KA+, launched late in 2016. It wasn't adventurously styled - the Blue Oval brand's 'One Ford' global product policy by then discouraged cars of that kind - but in compensation, buyers were offered five doors in a KA for the first time and near-supermini-standards of cabin space. Low pricing was promised - and achieved thanks to an affordable Indian production plant and super-simple underpinnings borrowed from the old sixth generation Fiesta. Unfortunately, the engineware was also borrowed from that elderly design and the KA+ wasn't long in the showrooms before that began to feel a bit dated as part of a package that, to be frank, needed an extra injection of character. Hence the need for the heavily revised KA+ model range launched in 2018. The main petrol engine with this updated car was an all-new Ti-VCT three cylinder unit, there was a diesel option for the first time, equipment and media connectivity standards had improved and buyers could also specify an 'SUV'-style Active trim level at the top of the range. Lots of changes then, but they weren't enough to save the KA+, which was quietly deleted from the Ford range at the end of 2019.

What You Get

Think of a Ford KA and if you know this product line, it's still quite hard not to picture the almost wilful aesthetic contrariness of the bug-shaped first generation version. There's nothing quite like that here, though for the 2018 updates, Ford did tweak the front grille, the front apron and the bumpers of the standard model, put they changed the headlamps and added C-shaped daytime running light mouldings in a bid to give it a little more aesthetic presence. If you want a KA+ that stands out a little more on the school run, you'll need the 'SUV'-style 'Active' version. From a profile perspective, the main difference with the Active variant over the standard car is a so-called 'Rough Road Suspension' package which raises ride height by 23mm. The black wheel arch mouldings add a bit of purpose too. We're not quite so sure about the rather awkward-looking silver roof rails but they certainly suit the whole lifestyle vibe. KA+ Active buyers also get unique grey-finished 15-inch 4x2-spoke alloy wheels: the same rims come with a silver finish on the ordinary 'Zetec'-trimmed variant. KA+ buyers who've tried other citycar-sector models are, we think, going to be very pleasantly surprised at the size of this Ford. Think of, say, a rival Fiat Panda. At nearly 4-metres long, this KA+ is a full 224mm lengthier than one of those. And it's a whopping 334mm longer than something like a Kia Picanto. As Ford likes to put it, what you're getting here is 'Big for the price of small'. The other thing you're getting, we should point out, is a small runabout that's a pretty insignificant 111mm shorter than a much pricier Fiesta. In place of the chiselled, slanty lines of a Fiesta, sense and sensibility reigns here, the boxy, glassy shape sticking to a regimented regime of horizontal creases. True, it's the kind of profile that could have been launched at a motorshow twenty years ago, but it's also still one that just works if you place a premium on practicality. Older folk will like the way that the extra ride height of the 'Active' model makes getting in slightly easier. The Ti-VCT engine isn't the only thing this facelifted KA+ model borrowed from an entry-level Fiesta. That supermini also donated this facelifted car's 6.5-inch 'SYNC 3' centre-dash infotainment screen, a standard feature providing you avoid entry-level trim. If you're not familiar with the SYNC package, it doesn't take long to adjust to it, with the central dash monitor divided into sectors that allow you to activate audio, 'phone or Mobile App options via either voice control or the touchscreen icons. You can't have navigation built into this package but you can stream a navigation app in from your 'phone thanks to this set-up's standard 'Apple CarPlay' and 'Android Auto' compatibility. Enough. On the Road

The KA+ may be a South American-conceived, Indian-made product but it was thoroughly re-developed for the European market with a package of engineering changes that really paid off when it comes to the driving dynamics it can offer. It helps that all the tweaked suspension bits have been bolted to the 'Global B' platform that made the old 6th generation Fiesta such a fun steer. In fact, there's a lot of that car in the way that this one flows through the turns with the kind of poise and agility that by and large, other city-segment rivals simply can't match. Of course, this little Ford is much more at home within the city limits. We found it agile around town, easy to park and perfect for parents thanks to its spacious size. Under the bonnet, as part of the 2018 model year changes, Ford replaced the original KA+ model's 1.2-litre Duratec four cylinder petrol engine with a more modern three cylinder Ti-VCT unit. This unit, also 1.2-litre in size, was offered with the same 70 and 85PS power outputs as its predecessor and was supposed to deliver around 10% more mid-range pulling power, though you still have to thrash this car quite hard to get anywhere quickly. The Ti-VCT engine is also slightly more economic than its predecessor, delivering 56.5mpg on the combined cycle and 114g/km of CO2 in the mainstream 'Zetec' 85PS version of this model that most customers buy. If you want to do better than that, there's a minority interest 1.5-litre TDCi 95PS diesel engine available. The quicker petrol unit and that diesel are the two engines offered to buyers of the SUV-style 'Active' variant, which gets an extra 23mm of ride height, a wider track, a larger front anti-roll bar, revisions to the steering and optimised front shock absorbers that feature a special hydraulic rebound stopper that smooths out the bumps or jolts you'd get over rougher surfaces.

Overall

This improved KA+ model offered evidence back in 2018 that the Blue Oval brand was starting to get the hang of the whole 'global car' thing. Having a product for every market is fine, provided the design in question can be tuned for the needs and preferences of different continents - in the way this updated KA+ really was. That's not to say that this citycar wouldn't have been better if it'd been created from scratch for Europe like a rival Volkswagen up! Or Peugeot 108 - it probably would have been. But by careful development of this South American-conceived, Indian-made package, Ford was able to narrow the gap to established class contenders like these. The driving dynamics in fact are class-leading from this period. Inevitably, there are a few issues. We'd expected the introduction of the three cylinder Ti-VCT 1.2-litre engine to make much more of a difference to this car's running cost efficiency figures than it actually did. Still, the figures in question are no worse than those you'd get from rival Vauxhall Viva and Fiat Panda models from this era. And in this Ford's case, there is (with this facelifted model) the option of diesel power if you really do need better fuel consumption and lower CO2 readings. Otherwise, providing you don't have unrealistic expectations when it comes to interior quality, there's much to like here. We think the rugged-ised 'Active' version was a useful addition to the range. The 'SYNC 3' infotainment system was a good step forward too. This model's real trump card over its rivals though, was something it'd always had: class-leading rear cabin space and boot capacity. It's not just about feet and inches either. So many cars in this segment irritate by making buyers do without a conventional three-seater rear bench and properly-opening rear windows. Both are standard on this Ford. And in summary? Well what we have here is a reminder that all citycars are not the same. This one, we'd say, is the only contender in its class from this period large and practical enough for a supermini-sector buyer to realistically consider - and that's a strong sales point. It all means that in our view, family buyers shopping for a citycar from the 2018-2020 period really have to have this one on their list.
