You can choose to have Vauxhall's smallest model in battery-powered form. Jonathan Crouch takes a look at the Corsa-e.
To suit the current zeitgeist, there's a version of Vauxhall's fifth generation Corsa supermini - this car, the Corsa-e - that's fully battery-powered. But would you want to pay the significant premium necessary to get it? Time to check out this little battery-powered hatch.
Supermini-sized full-electric cars haven't generally been very credible to date, with one or two notable exceptions. But times are changing. Pretty soon, most volume brand manufacturers are going to be offering little EVs with the kind of driving range you once had to pay luxury money for. Vauxhall has found itself in the vanguard of this change courtesy of the borrowed PSA Group technology we first saw in the Peugeot e-208 and the DS 3 Crossback E-TENSE. It appears in this car, the Corsa-e, the Griffin brand's very first Zero Emissions model.
Here, as with this model's cousin the Peugeot e-208, a 50kWh lithium-ion battery is mated to a 100kW electric motor putting out 136PS and working through the usual single-speed auto transmission you get with EVs. Like all electric vehicles, this one develops all its torque at once and simply hurls itself away from rest (the 30mph mark is reached in just 2.1s and 60mph is crested in only 7.6s), disguising the fact that (also like all EVs) this Zero Emissions variant has a bit of a weight problem - that drivetrain adds over 300kgs of bulk. That other small battery-powered little hatches manage this issue a little better is evidenced by the fact that the Corsa-e's WLTP-rated 222 mile driving range is easily improved upon by the latest versions of the Renault ZOE and the BMW i3. Still, all of this does represent a brave new world for forward-thinking supermini buyers looking to make the (still rather expensive) switch into all-electric motoring; it seems like only yesterday, after all, that a fully-charged small EV could only manage around half the kind of range you get from this one. Of course, you certainly won't achieve anything like that kind of operating capability if you get anywhere near this EV's quoted 93mph top speed. Or if you habitually drive your Corsa-e in the 'Sport' setting that'll be necessary to release to full 136PS power output just mentioned. The quoted range figure will only be distantly possible if you instead engage a somewhat restrictive 'Eco' mode that drops power output right down to 83PS.
Visually, this electric Corsa is virtually identical to the combustion-engined version, with the exception of different alloy wheel designs. An exterior highlight that Vauxhall is particularly proud of it's the fact that this is the first car in the class to feature adaptive glare-free full-LED headlights - the brand's 'IntelliLux LED Matrix' package, the kind of thing previously restricted to much larger cars. Inside, all Corsas have identical cabins, which centre around a new touchscreen infotainment system on the dash. Two set-ups are available to buyers, both with built-in navigation: a seven-inch Multimedia Navi system or top-spec 10-inch Multimedia Navi Pro. Both monitors deliver the expected smartphone-mirroring functionality. The two variants also get another 7-inch digital display featuring with virtual dials in the instrument binnacle. Build quality doesn't match the highest standards in this class, but ergonomically, there's not much to fault. The seats are supportive, nothing's irritatingly awkward to get to and everything's exactly where you expect it to. Rear seat space is a bit cramped but boot room is the same as with the combustion-engined versions - 309-litres, extendable to 1,118-litres when you fold the rear bench.
For this all-electric Corsa-e, there are two available trim levels - 'GS Line' and 'Ultimate' - and you'll be paying in the £27,000 to £30,000 bracket, once the available £1,500 government Plug-in grant has been deducted from the mildly alarming initial asking price. Both the Corsa-e and its cousin the Peugeot e-208 make more sense as EVs than another key Zero Emissions small car rival at this price point, the MINI Electric. That MINI's priced from around £28,000 and has a much lower operating range, a three-door-only body style and a tiny boot - plus it would probably cost around £3,000 more when equipped to a similar standard. There aren't really any other direct all-electric small hatch options. You can get battery-powered versions of the Volkswagen up! and the SEAT Mii from around £20,000, but they're all smaller city cars. A battery-powered family hatch like a Kia Niro EV or the Renault ZOE would cost from over £30,000.
If you're a Corsa-e owner, you'll need to know that getting anywhere near the quoted 222 mile WLTP-rated range figure will necessitate staying in the powertrain's provided 'Eco' mode - activating its 'Sport' mode setting will reduce your range by around 10%. What about charging times? Well, using the 7kW wallbox you'll need to get installed in your garage as a Corsa-e owner, a full charge from empty will take seven and-a-half hours. If when you're out and about, you find a public 50kW Rapid Charger, the replenishment time to charge from 15 to 80% is 45 minutes. If you're fortunate enough to find a 100kW Rapid Charger, that falls to 30 minutes. If the charger in question is a 22kW accelerated public charger, then the replenishment time will vary depending on whether you've paid a little extra to get the Corsa-e's standard 7.4kW on-board charger upgraded to 11kW spec. If you do that, you can reduce the 5 hour replenishment time with this kind of charger to 3 hours and 20 minutes. At the point of purchase of a Corsa-e, Vauxhall will throw in a free six month subscription to BP Chargemaster's Polar Network, which after that point would, at the time of this test, cost you £7.85 a month.
We're still at the stage at which you have to be pretty sold on the EV concept to choose a car like this. Vauxhall says its goal is to reach a stage where the overall full-life cost of a Corsa-e (taking into account purchase price or leasing costs, plus charging fees) is approximately the same as what you'd pay to run a well-specified petrol automatic variant. Well we're some way off that at present but it'll happen sooner or later. For the time being, this is pretty much state of the art in terms of full-electric small cars. Yes, you can get the same technology in a Peugeot e-208 or a DS 3 Crossback E-TENSE. And yes, other compact EVs like the Renault ZOE and the BMW i3 will take you a little further on a single charge. But this Vauxhall will reach a far wider audience than any of the models just mentioned. It will play a key part in democratising the idea of a supermini EV. And that makes it a very important car indeed.
With a little Gallic assistance, Vauxhall has rejuvanted its Corsa supermini to make sure it stays relevant to buyers in this crowded market. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
Time, perhaps, to change the way you feel about Vauxhall's Corsa. This fifth generation version aims to surprise in all the ways its predecessor was unremarkable. As a result, on paper at least, it's the most competitive supermini the brand has ever brought us. There's even an all-electric model.
Vauxhall's Corsa has always been a well-priced, practical supermini but it's usually been let down by distinctively average engines, a bit of a weight problem, less than cutting-edge technology and the lack of the kind of spark that would endear you to the thing. All stuff that Vauxhall reckons has been sorted in this fifth generation version. We'll see. The key boxes certainly seem to have been ticked here. Vauxhall is merely an Anglo/Teutonic outpost of the French PSA Peugeot/Citroen conglomerate these days, so it's not surprising to find this MK5 model Corsa pretty much completely based on the second generation Peugeot 208 announced at about the same time. Which means that this car will get that one's battery full-electric tech too - enter the Corsa-e. Most Corsa buyers though, will continue to want a fossil-fuelled lump beneath the bonnet. Vauxhall's also promising a big step up in provision when it comes to driver assistance systems, infotainment and connectivity. Sounds promising.
This PSA-era Corsa starts off with a huge advantage over its predecessors: a much lighter CMP platform that's enabled it to lose a shed-load of weight in comparison to its direct predecessor - 108kgs to be exact. Vauxhall's engineers would have liked to have built on this by specifically tuning the drive dynamics of this car to British roads - as the brand has very effectively done with previous generation Corsa models, but that wasn't possible this time round. Something evidenced, for example, by the way the slightly over-light steering hasn't been tweaked for the twistier, more challenging tarmac common in our market - as previously, it might usually have been. Engine-wise, we don't think your choice is going to be that difficult. You probably won't want a diesel - which is just as well because the 1.5-litre Turbo D unit is no longer offered here. Ideally, you'd want to look beyond the base petrol powerplant, a 75PS normally aspirated version of the PSA Group's usual three cylinder 1.2-litre engine that in this form doesn't have a great deal of pulling power. That same 1.2 Turbo unit's much better suited to this car in the turbocharged 100PS guise that we tried, a form in which it manages to be very competitively clean and frugal. You can order this unit with 8-speed auto transmission - and you have to have an auto if you get the top 1.2-litre 130PS powerplant. As for the all-electric Corsa-e version, well just one variant of that is available featuring a 50kWh battery mated to a 100kW electric motor, this confection developing a healthy 134PS.
The idea this time round with the Corsa is to strike a better balance between sportiness and comfort, thanks to a re-designed body shell and frugal aluminium engines. There are lighter underpinnings too, based on the new Common Modular Platform (CMP) platform this car shares with the latest Peugeot 208. Despite this, this fifth generation model is slightly larger than its predecessor, with its bigger body and longer wheelbase delivering more interior and boot space from this five-door-only model. The smarter body panels are still fashioned from the usual range of high-strength steels, but it's all been stitched together in a more weight-conscious manner, saving 40kg over the outgoing Corsa. Visually, the standard Corsa is virtually identical to the electric version, with the exception of different alloy wheel designs. An exterior highlight that Vauxhall is particularly proud of it's the fact that this is the first car in the class to feature adaptive glare-free full-LED headlights - the brand's 'IntelliLux LED Matrix' package, the kind of thing previously restricted to much larger cars. If you'd got used to Corsa pricing for base models being in the £14,000 to £16,500 bracket (which is where it's been in recent times), you might need a cup of hot sweet tea after perusal of the figures being asked for this fifth generation French-inspired version, which start from around £17,400 for the feeblest 1.2-litre base-spec petrol variant. Top-spec 'Ultimate' trim with a combustion engine now costs from just under £23,500. The all-electric Corsa-e sells in the £27,000-£30,000 bracket after deduction of the available £1,500 government Plug-in Car Grant. Five doors are mandatory, the three-door body style of previous models being deemed no longer necessary. There are three core trim level options for the Corsa - 'Design' (for combustion models only), then 'GS Line' and 'Ultimate'. On combustion models, there's the option of auto transmission - around £1,700 more on petrol models only. Even the most basic 'Design' derivatives are quite well equipped, fitted with 16-inch double spoke alloy wheels, a 7-inch touch-screen radio, a leather flat bottom steering wheel and LED Headlights with LED daytime running lights.
Huge efforts have gone in here to improve running cost efficiency by saving weight. As a result, expect the 1.2-litre PureTech petrol variants that many will want to be very acceptably clean and frugal. With the 100PS model, you can expect to manage 52.3mpg on the WLTP combined cycle and return a CO2 reading of up to 117g/km, which is pretty good going for a car in this segment. The base 1.2-litre 75PS version manages similar readings - 53.3mpg and 118g/km. But of course if you're really interested in ecological efficiency, there'll be just one variant of this car that'll interest you, the all-electric Corsa-e. For this derivative, Vauxhall claims a WLTP-rated driving range between charges of 222 miles. And fast charging at the rate of 100kW is available via a CCS socket hidden behind the fuel cap, with an 0-80% charge achievable in around 30 minutes. If you install a wallbox at home, you can recharge the battery from empty in around five hours if you have an 11kW electricity supply - or in around eight hours with a 7.4kW supply. Bear in mind that the Corsa-e is around 350kgs heavier than the ordinary version.
Ultimately, what we're looking at here is a Corsa that can. It can be fun to drive. It can deliver a big car feel. And it can stack up well on the balance sheet. It's a small Vauxhall for which no apologies need to be made. All that will worry obvious supermini rivals. After all, this model's predecessor lacked a little in all of these areas, yet still racked up very respectable sales against them. This MK5 version's still very competitively priced, but has become a contender in this segment that sells on more than just sheer value. It's not perfect of course. It doesn't lead its class in terms of either space, efficiency or driving dynamics. And more work is still needed under the bonnet to deliver an engine range in which all the options are as good as the mid-range three cylinder turbo petrol unit. The key though, is that this Vauxhall is now there, or thereabouts, in the three key areas I've just mentioned. Add to that the wide model line-up and the likely deals on offer and you've a supermini that more than ever, needs to remain high on any family's shopping list.

Out on the road, you can't help but notice the fifth generation version of Vauxhall's little Corsa supermini. In the throngs of city traffic, there is very little else that can cut its way as deftly through the queues and still leave you unruffled at the other end. The first time I met this car, it seemed to beg me to drive it and I did, with great enjoyment. This MK5 model promised to be something special from my first glimpse of it in the car park. First impressions are of a rounded, friendly look with a broader front grille than Corsas of old. The overall proportioning isn't that much of a departure. An exterior highlight that Vauxhall is particularly proud of it's the fact that this is the first car in the class to feature adaptive glare-free full-LED headlights - the brand's 'IntelliLux LED Matrix' package, the kind of thing previously restricted to much larger cars.

There's room for two adults in the back but I struggled to fit two child seats in, plus a booster in the middle. Legroom was good but the payback for this was the smallish boot space. Still, take out the parcel shelf and you could still fit in some luggage if you needed to. The quality of materials used is leagues ahead of older Corsas and like the Astra, there's the bulletproof feeling of build quality that's as good as anything in the sector.
You should feel at home at the wheel of this car and the engines on offer are a willing bunch. There are two petrol units and a single diesel to choose from. Ideally, you'd want to avoid the base 75PS 1.2-litre petrol unit, which can only be had with 5-speed manual transmission. And go instead for the more modern three cylinder, direct injection turbocharged 100PS 1.2-litre petrol powerplant your dealer will prefer to point you towards. The minority-interest Corsa engine option is a 1.5-litre 100PS diesel which will be a rare sight, but might make sense if you habitually undertake longer distances in your supermini. All the engines on offer are helped in their task by a significant weight reduction this time round - Vauxhall says it can be as much as 10%, which is quite a lot in supermini terms. Base-spec variants can now weigh as little as 980kgs. As for the all-electric Corsa-e version, well just one variant of that will be available featuring a 50kWh battery mated to a 100kW electric motor, this confection developing a healthy 134hp.
Prices have risen a bit, starting at around £15,500, but you could pay as much as around £25,000 for the full-electric version. There are four core trim level options for the Corsa this time round - 'SE', 'SRi', 'Elite Nav' and 'Ultimate'. Go for the 'SE' or 'SRi' variants and there are interim 'Nav' and 'Premium' options. You can have the 'Elite Nav' model in an upgraded 'Elite Nav Premium' state of spec too. It's all quite complex. Even the most basic 'SE' derivatives are quite well equipped, fitted with 16-inch double spoke alloy wheels, a 7-inch touch-screen radio, a leather flat bottom steering wheel and LED Headlights with LED daytime running lights.
For day-to-day driving, this fifth generation Corsa is stronger than ever before. Overall, if you're seeking something fun, frugal and cheap to run, I can think of few better small cars.
